Description

Coffee Talk at Kahuku: Birds, Not Mosquitos

Hawaiian birds—particularly the honeycreepers— have been devastated by avian diseases which are transmitted by non-native mosquitoes. There is hope and the opportunity to use a common bacteria to reduce mosquito populations, break the disease cycle, and allow the forest birds to thrive. Birds, Not Mosquitoes (BNM), a collaboration of over 20 state, federal and nonprofit partners, and dozens of individuals, is working to implement this tool to save our native birds. Chris Farmer (American Bird Conservancy) and Evelyn Wight (The Nature Conservancy) will talk about the conservation crisis, the promising solution, and answer any questions you might have. Dr. Chris Farmer is Hawai‘i Program Director for American Bird Conservancy, working on saving native Hawaiian birds across all the islands. He guides ABC’s activities with Birds, Not Mosquitoes involving mosquito control techniques to solve Hawaiian birds’ avian disease-mosquito crisis. Other projects focus on Hawaiian forest bird ecology and behavior; biology and logistics of translocations; impacts of exotic predators, rodents, and ungulates; influences of invasive arthropods on native food webs; and forest regeneration and growth.
