Candlelight Hike
Explore Sleeping Bear Dunes at night along a one-mile, flat terrain trail lit by luminaries.
These hikes are Feb. 8 and 15, from 6-8 pm. Arrive anytime between 6 and 7:30 pm to fully experience the hike.
The hike is a one-way loop, heading south. Look for the welcome table at the base of the dune for instructions. Park staff and volunteers will be waiting for you along the path to provide insight into all thing's night.
In the past, parking has been limited right at 6 pm, so coming a little later may guarantee a parking spot. If the parking lot is full, visitors are encouraged to take a quiet drive to view Lake Michigan in Glen Haven (2 minutes north on M109), and then return in 15-20 minutes to find a spot.
All ages are welcome. Pets should stay cozied up at home as the trail is closed to pets in the winter.
Snowshoes, trekking poles, or other traction devices like shoe chains are encouraged. Depending on conditions, snowshoes may be available to borrow on a first-come, first-served basis.
Important:
Programs may be cancelled or the location may change due to snow conditions or winter temperatures.
The decision to cancel or change the location is made two hours in advance. Please call 231-326-4700, ext. 5005, for a voicemail message with the final details.
Programs should be assumed cancelled if Leelanau County or Benzie County are under a "Winter Storm Warning" issued by the National Weather Service.
