Mount Rainier, Active Volcano | Peak Perspectives:125th Anniversary Speaker Series
For the 125th Anniversary of Mount Rainier National Park, we've invited Dr. Thomas Sisson, a Research Geologist with the United States Geologic Survey (USGS) as he demystifies the geology of Mount Rainier. As an icon of the Pacific Northwest, Mount Rainier is a beckoning glacier island on hot summer days, a magnet for storms in winter, and a goal for aspiring mountaineers – but it is also an active volcano with the attendant hazards and fascinating earth science. Visitors are sometimes confused, however, thinking that “active” means there will be red-hot lava or explosions, and in their absence Mount Rainier must be dormant or extinct. In this talk, he'll cover the reasons volcano scientists consider Mount Rainier to be active, the hazards it poses, its styles of eruption and how they interact with glaciers, and the longer-term growth, collapse, and regrowth of the volcano that created the landscape of Mount Rainier National Park.
