Description

In commemoration of Juneteenth, Shiloh National Military Park is inviting painters of all ages and skill levels to join them at the Corinth Contraband Camp at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 22, 2024. Artists will produce artwork based on the sites at the Contraband Camp.

Participants will receive a brief history of the Contraband Camp by a park ranger followed by a time of free paint using the medium of their choice. Artists are encouraged to bring their art supplies and enjoy an afternoon of Plein-air painting. We will have some supplies for our younger artists to use.

Artwork will be displayed at the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center for one month beginning July 13, 2024.

The Corinth Contraband Camp is a site considered a “birthplace of freedom,” for thousands of African American families fleeing the bondage of slavery and the protection of the Union Army. At its peak, more than 6,000 freedmen resided in this small town, which included a church, commissary, hospital, frame houses, and a street grid.

The Corinth Contraband Camp is located at 850 North Parkway in Corinth. Artists are invited to pre-register by calling the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center at 662-287-9273.
