Description

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, February 3, 4 and 5, 2023, from 10 am to 4 pm in the Visitor Center, Lyndon Ahiyite, Zuni Silversmith and Freddie Leekya, Zuni Fetish Carver, will demonstrate their handicrafts and will share their knowledge of Zuni culture and art.

About Lyndon Ahiyite

  • Lyndon has been creating jewelry for more than 20 years. He is moved by the art of jewelry making and is inspired by his culture and others in his community. He is known for his inlaid butterfly and dragonfly silver pendants that feature hand cut tiles of turquoise, spiny oyster, mother of pearl, and jet. Lyndon is honored to be a part of the jewelry-making tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation in his community and is continuing to pass the tradition onto others.

About Freddie Leekya

  • Freddie was born and raised in the Pueblo of Zuni and is a third-generation carver from the famous Leekya Deyuse family. Freddie started carving alongside his father and has been carving for more than 20 years. Most of his fetishes are carved out of the travertine found on Zuni lands. Freddie says, "I never know what animals I will discover within each stone. You just look at it and eventually something starts popping out. It takes patience." Freddie's inspiration comes from his father, grandfather, his culture, and his respect for wildlife.

Meet and watch Lyndon and Freddie at work at Grand Canyon's South Rim Visitor Center, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, February 3 through 5, from 10am to 4pm.

  • The Cultural Demonstration program provides an opportunity for park visitors and community members to interact with tribal artisans from Grand Canyon's traditionally associated tribes - and for them to share their history and crafts, along with the skills, knowledge, and efforts involved in creating their handicrafts.

  • This series is made possible with grants from Grand Canyon Conservancy.
