Description
Petroglyph National Monument continues its summer-long Cultural Demonstration program featuring Josephine Toya of Jemez Pueblo, New Mexico. Josephine will demonstrate how she creates traditional Jemez Pueblo pottery.
There is quite a variety in Jemez pottery but Josephine Toya’s pieces reflect a long and proud tradition of pottery that dates from the 1700s. She uses subtle, natural earth tones in shades of buff, cream, black, and russet, over red- and tan-slipped pots, bowls, jars, and her specialty Corn Maidens. Join us for a rare and special look behind the making of fine Jemez pottery—from a mound of clay to a beautifully formed work of art—right before your eyes.
The National Park Service believes that exposure to a variety of cultural traditions expands a person’s ability to understand, accept, and respect those that may differ from their own. Cultural demonstrations are free and available to the public from 10 am to 4 pm at the Las Imágenes Visitor Center, located at Unser Blvd. & Western Trail.
