John Marshall as Biographer
John Marshall is remembered almost exclusively as the nation's fourth chief justice. However, at the beginning of the nineteenth century Marshall undertook the arduous task of writing the biography of the recently deceased George Washington. Marshall's collaborator in this work was Washington's nephew and Marshall's colleague on the supreme court, Justice Bushrod Washington. Learn more about this little-known episode in American historical writing. The exhibit can be viewed in the Rare Book and Manuscript Gallery of the Washington’s Headquarters Museum 30 Washington Place, Morristown NJ through November 30, 2024. The Museum is currently open Thursday-Sunday 10 AM to 4 PM. Museum Summer hours (July & August) are Wednesday-Sunday 10 am to 4 PM.
