Description

Members of the Interpretive Staff of Natchez National Historical Park will lead a walking tour through downtown Natchez every Thursday morning.  The two topics will rotate each week.  "The Natchez Tornado of 1840" will lead participants through the events of May 7 of that year, when the second deadliest tornado on record devastated the city, killing at least 317 people and causing an estimated $1.27 million in damages.  Participants in "William Johnson's Natchez," the second tour, will have an in-depth look at the world of Mr. Johnson, the Barber of Natchez, whose home today, is a site of the Natchez National Historical Park.  Born enslaved, Mr. Johnson was freed at the age of 11, and prospered as a free man of color in a slave society. His diaries, discovered in the house in the 1930s, are universally acclaimed as the most important account of life in the pre-civil war south. Guides will use Johnson's diary to provide tour participants an in-depth look at the man and his environment.
