Join us for our annual All Saints community altar and candlelight concert featuring the Herlin Riley Sextet with special guests Alune Wade Band.
Since coming of age in the nurturing environment of a very musical family and a distinguished bloodline of drummers, New Orleans native Herlin Riley emerged from that most creative era of all things rhythmic in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, to enliven the ensembles of such influential and demanding improvisers as pianist Ahmad Jamal and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis through his commanding yet elegant rhythmic presence. His authoritative style of melodic percussion is deeply imbued in the fertile creative soil of the Crescent City, encompassing as it does the entire length and breadth of America’s ongoing musical journey. Herlin will be joined onstage by Gregg Stafford (trumplet/vocals) Rickie Monie (piano), Louis Ford (woodwinds), Joe Lastie (drums), Mark Brooks (bass), and Erica Falls (vocals).
Alune Wade, hailed as a "supertalent" on bass by DLF Kultur, has graced stages alongside luminaries like Joe Zawinul and Marcus Miller. As a pivotal figure in African Jazz, the Senegalese artist skillfully amalgamates African rhythms and Jazz into eclectic, cosmopolitan compositions. Alune was selected by Marcus Miller in 2015 to contribute to Miller's album "Afrodeezia" but his path to success began earlier when he was discovered by Ismaël Lô at the age of 18. Since then, he has collaborated with an impressive array of contemporary music legends and performed alongside artists such as Salif Keita, Oumou Sangaré, Bobby McFerrin, Joe Zawinul, Fatoumata Diawara, Paco Sery, Bela Fleck, Cheick Tidiane Seck, Deep Forest, and Gregory Porter. Apart from his distinctive and vibrant electric bass playing, it is his voice that, much like the West African griots, tells stories with deep emotion and touching falsetto/tonality.
