Slavery at White Haven
The institution of slavery was central to the operation of the White Haven estate. Every white family that lived at White Haven before the Civil War enslaved black laborers, including Ulysses S. Grant. Among other duties, the enslaved cooked, cleaned, grew crops, and tended to livestock. Visitors will learn about the deep history of slavery in this 60-minute guided tour of the White Haven estate.
