Description
The Oscar on display at Women’s Rights National Historical Park was awarded to the United States War Department for the 1946 film ‘Seeds of Destiny’. This short propaganda film was directed by David Miller of the U.S. Army Signal Core in Astoria, New York and it created more than 200 million dollars for war relief. The purpose of this film was to remind the world about the plight of millions of children displaced or suffering after the Holocaust.
David Miller’s work was inspired in part by Frank Capra who directed the ‘Why we Fight’ series for the U.S. Army Signal Core. You may recognize Frank Capra as the director of ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ (believed to be based upon the town of Seneca Falls; often called the ‘real Bedford Falls’).
Women’s Rights National Historical Park is pleased to display this Oscar on loan from the Signal Corps Museum in Fort Gordon, Georgia. Both Miller and Capra recognized that “each person makes a difference”.
The Oscar is on display now in the Orientation Room on the First Floor.
