Description
Join us to learn about the Fur Trade in North American and Grand Portage's role. Grand Portage was the interior depot of the Montreal North West Company (NWCo) from 1779-1802. It was during the 1790s that the NWCo. controlled over 75% of the fur market, surpassing the Hudson's Bay Company by four times. Ranger Koster will share information about the fur companies and the employees as well as the roles played by British Traders, French-Canadian Voyageurs, and Native Americans in fur harvesting.
Ranger Karl Koster has been speaking and researching the Great Lakes/ Canadian Fur Trade for over 30 years. He has been with Grand Portage National Monument since 1997. For the last 10-15 years Ranger Koster has been the bark canoe-builder and cooper (maker of buckets & barrels) at the Grand Portage Monument in the summer. In the winter he writes and gives presentations on the Fur Trade. He lives in Grand Portage with my wife Amber Pfeil and 2 daughters.
