"Molly Pitcher" was not a single historical figure, but a composite folk hero inspired by the actions of different people, most of them women who carried water to troops during the revolution.

One woman was Mary Ludwig Hays McCauley who was born in 1754.  She married William Hays and when the Revolutionary War broke out she went with her husband.

Legend says at Battle of Monmouth Mary was carrying water to the troops when her husband’s artillery man was wounded and Mary took up loading the artillery in his place.
