Join the Civil War Defenses of Washington (CWDW) for the latest episode of the Lost Earthworks of the Defenses of Washington Series at Fort Willard located in Fairfax County, Virginia.
The program will air on Facebook LIVE on the CWDW page at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 21, 2020.
Fort Willard was established as one of the four redoubts that supported Fort Lyon to cover the southern approaches to Alexandria, Virginia. According to Brigadier General John G. Barnard, Chief Engineer Defenses of Washington, "Fort Willard was a small, unflanked, enclosed work, heavily armed with artillery, and with a range of bombproofs on one face."
Today, Fairfax County preserves the remnant earthworks at Fort Willard Park. The Civil War Defenses of Washington will be shooting LIVE from the park. #FindYourFort
