Description
The Walk ’n Mass Volkssport Club and Lowell National Historical Park invites you to walk either the 5km (3.1 miles) or 10km (6.2 miles) routes exploring Lowell, MA. Anyone may participate regardless of age or physical fitness. A non-competitive event, this walk is accomplished at your own pace along a marked 5km (3.1 miles) or 10km (6.2 miles) route. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Leashed pets are welcomed on the trail and clean-up laws apply.
This free event starts and finishes at the Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center (246 Market Street). Free parking is available at 304 Dutton Street. Walkers start any time between 9 a.m. and 12 noon, and finish by 3 p.m.
Both the 10km and 5km walk routes travel past restored 19th century mill buildings, power canals, brick and stone gatehouses and lock chambers, the historic commercial center of downtown Lowell, and the Riverwalk along the Merrimack River. The 10km walk also includes a stretch through part of the campus of UMass Lowell, an assortment of city parks, Lowell's historic Acre neighborhood, and a view of the Pawtucket Falls. Both walks travel past St. Anne's Church and the Kirk Street Agent's House, both of which are associated with the Underground Railroad. Both the 5km and 10km walk routes are mostly on paved sidewalks and canal walkways through downtown Lowell and nearby areas. A few sections include walking along a well-graded, wide, unpaved dirt pathway, and there are several gentle to moderate hills throughout both walks. The 5km route is rated 1A while the 10km route has a rating of 2A. Both routes are generally suitable for strollers but only the 5km is doable for wheelchairs.
