Description
On Saturday, June 8, Shiloh National Military Park will host the ranger guided tour "Slaughter in Sara Bell's Field." Join Ranger Charles Spearman for a hike along the battlelines near the famous Peach Orchard.
By mid-morning as Confederate Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston observed Gen. James Chalmers’ Brigade overrun the camp of Union Col. David Stuart he said, “that checkmates them.” Johnston apparently thought he had finally turned the Union right flank and could trap them in the swampy ground of Owl and Snake Creeks to the west. Soon he would find the path to Pittsburg Landing blocked by another division commanded by Gen. Stephen A. Hurlbut.
The next few hours would find the two forces struggling for control in the Widow Sara Bell’s Field. The struggle would bring heavy losses including the 9th Illinois Infantry with 60% casualties and Gen. Johnston himself, the highest ranking American general to die in battle.
The hike will take place from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm and participants will meet at Tour Stop #18 (Peach Orchard). The distance of the hike is a little more than two-miles miles over moderate terrain. Participants should wear clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather. Insect repellent, sunscreen, and water is recommended.
Pre-registration is required to participate in the hike. Please call the park visitor center at 731-689-5696 to register.
