Relics of Reconstruction: The Reconstruction Era Roots of National Cemeteries and Memorial Day

Reconstruction Era National Historical Park

Special Event
  • May 25, 2020 at 8:00 AM

Memorial Day emerged during the Reconstruction era as a commemoration for Union dead, and many of the early efforts to commemorate the holiday in the Deep South were underaken by Freedmen. Join us for this "virtual program" on our park Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ReconstructionNPS). At 8am (time is tentative), the park will post a video on the history of Memorial Day and how national cemeteries are relics of the Reconstruction Era.

The video will also be posted to our park website at  https://www.nps.gov/media/video/view.htm?id=D2D24CEE-FDA8-1F33-3E716C6BCE3CC873
