Description

Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site will host an instructional “Living History Encampment” June 5 -9 2019.  This popular living history event will provide participants the unique opportunity to learn about the summer of 1845 by living it!  You will be immersed in the role of trader, trapper-hunter, laborer, blacksmith, carpenter, teamster or domestic cook. You will gain a much deeper understanding of the realities of the fur trade era in the American West. Participants will be provided study materials and lessons on interpretive skills, fur trade and living history.  Living historians will teach and direct participants in use of 19th century work techniques and social skills. There will also be required precourse assignments.

Participants will be given a tour of the site and classroom instruction on Wednesday and Thursday. Starting Thursday night, students will be in period clothing and in role from then to noon on Sunday. Students will have to arrange for their own lodging and food Tuesday to Thursday evening.  From Thursday evening to Sunday noon, you will be in role with mentors by your side offering their expertise and assisting you with frontier life.  Application for graduate level college credit will be made available the first day of class. Food will be rationed depending on your role. You will be expected to speak “in character” from Thursday evening through Sunday morning. Keep in mind that depending on your role, this will include hard, hot work. This may entail getting up early to cook or taking a midnight shift at sentry duty. We are endeavoring to create as historically correct experience as possible!
