Astrophotography Workshop — Evening Program

Have you ever wanted to photograph the Milky Way? Whether you have a modern smartphone or a DSLR/mirrorless camera, this workshop will introduce you to the fundamentals of landscape astrophotography and help you capture the beauty of the night sky.

Join us on Saturday, July 18, at 7:00 p.m. at the Mammoth Cave Amphitheater for an evening of learning beneath the skies of Kentucky's only International Dark Sky Park.

During the workshop, we'll cover:

• Camera and smartphone settings for night photography
• Choosing compositions and planning your shot
• Focusing in the dark
• How to process your images to reduce noise and reveal incredible detail in the night sky

After the lesson, we'll move to the Visitor Center Bus Loop to put those skills into practice. Staff will be available to answer questions and help you set up your equipment as we photograph two of the summer sky's most spectacular targets:

• The Milky Way Core in the direction of Sagittarius
• The rich star fields surrounding Sadr in the constellation Cygnus

What to bring:

• A smartphone with a night mode, or a DSLR/mirrorless camera
• A sturdy tripod
• A wide-angle lens (recommended for dedicated cameras)
• A remote shutter release or intervalometer (recommended)
• A red flashlight (optional)
• A chair and water for your comfort (optional)

No previous astrophotography experience is necessary. Whether you're taking your very first night sky photograph or looking to improve your skills, this workshop will give you the tools and techniques to create stunning images under Mammoth Cave's internationally recognized dark skies.

This program is free and open to the public. We hope to see you under the stars!
