Description
At around 1085 the earth at what is now called Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument began to rumble. A cinder cone volcano formed, and lava flows spilled from the sides of the volcano. Some 900 years later, participants of this walk will walk along the Bonito Lava Flow, and into the closed backcountry of the park. Join us to learn about this lands history, and view lava features like squeeze-ups, agglutinate mounds, and volcanic dikes.
This hike is around 1.5 miles round trip. Since the hike is on a lava flow, there is uneven and rocky terrain. There is limited shade, so participants should dress in layers, wear sun protection, and bring water and snacks.
