Description

To discover geologic novelties in the Land of Enchantment all that is required is a good map, a sense of adventure, and a good guide book that entices you to visit the most compelling geologic sites in New Mexico. More than every other state, except for Hawaii, New Mexico was shaped by volcanic eruptions, from supervolcano calderas, to young basalt flows and cinder cones. Ancient Puebloans likely witnessed the most recent eruptions as they carved their homes in volcanic tuff at what is now Bandelier National Monument, used pumice as a water-retaining mulch, and traded obsidian and turquiose far and wide. Legends of New Mexico's fiery origins are surpassed only by magical twists on the state's geologic sites.

Petroglyph National Monument and Western National Parks Association invite you to meet New Mexico Rocks! author Nathalie Brandes who will share New Mexico's most impressive geological site with you. Nathalie grew up studying geology with her father. She earned her BS and MS in geology at New Mexico Institue of Mining and Technology and continued graduate studies at Michigan Technological University. She worked at the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Miner Resources; taught various geology courses at Michigan Tech, The University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire, and at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. She is currently a professor of geosciences.

This presentation will take place at Petroglyph's Information Center Outdoor Amphitheater. Please park in the Information Center's parking lot then walk 100 yards west on a paved sidewalk to the amphitheater. Bring a seat pad to sit on or your favorite chair. Bring water, apply sunscreen, and wear a hat if you are sensitive to the sun. Shade sails cover the amphitheater's seating area but UV rays still penetrate the sail material.
