Description

Dr. Joseph P. Sánchez retired from the National Park Service in 2014. During his time with NPS, he served as superintendent of Petroglyph National Monument (2003-2014) and acting-superintendent at Pecos National Historical Park and at Fort Davis National Historic Site. He is also the founder and director of the Spanish Colonial Research Center at the University of New Mexico (1985 to present). Dr. Sánchez is also founder and editor of the Colonial Latin American Historical Review (CLAHR) which ran from 1991-2016.

Before his career with the National Park Service, Dr. Sánchez was a professor of Colonial Mexican history at the University of Arizona, Tucson. He was also director of the Mexican-American Studies and Research Center. He has taught at the University of New Mexico, Santa Ana College in Southern California and at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in Mexico. Dr. Sánchez has presented numerous papers at professional conferences in the United States, Canada, Sweden, Italy, Spain, and Mexico. Throughout his career, he has researched archives in Spain, Mexico, France, Italy, and England, and has published several studies on the Spanish frontiers in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Alaska. He has also directed and conducted research for several mandated studies by the United States Congress that resulted in the designation of several historical roads.

Internationally recognized and inducted into the prestigious knighthood order as Knight Commander of the Orden de Isabel la Católica by King don Juan Carlos of Spain, Dr. Sánchez remains dedicated in researching how Latino themes can better supplement and/or be integrated into the narration of our national story. His numerous scholarly publications include 30 book-length studies and archival guides as well as over 130 scholarly articles.

For this presentation, Dr. Sánchez will cover New Mexico's historical and cultural geography; the transformation from a frontier territory to a modern state, which began during World War II when Atomic Era technological advancements propelled New Mexico to the forefront of scientific research.

This free presentation will take place outdoors on the information center patio. Bench seating is provided however, you may bring a seat cushion or your own chair. Seating is first-come, first-seated.
