Junior Ranger Day / Build a Bat House

Jewel Cave National Monument

Special Event
  • Apr 18, 2020 at 1:00 PM
  • Free

The monument is offering a bat house (kit) construction project on Saturday, April 18. This event is kicking off National Park Week 2020 and celebrating National Junior Ranger Day.

The kits are free of charge; however, due to limited supplies, this event requires advance reservations. Furthermore, only one kit is available per family. NOTE: The reservation process will begin on Wednesday, March 18.

Additional bat information will be shared during the day, helping participants learn and appreciate this often misunderstood mammal. Upon building the kits, guidance will also be given to help families hang the bat boxes in appropriate places to attract bats.

Participants will work with park staff and volunteers to create the houses, as well as have opportunities to learn more about bats throughout the afternoon. Most important, participants will learn how the monument is combating White Nose Syndrome (WNS) with summer visitors entering and exiting the cave.

All youth participants need to be accompanied by a parent or adult chaperone.  The activity will take place outside; participants should dress according to the weather conditions.

Fees

There are no fees for this event; however, due to limited supplies, reservations are required.
