Fur Real: The Truth about Black Bears (Hike at Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center-Milepost 384)
Ever wondered what a black bear does all day in the forest? Embark on a family-friendly hike with a ranger! Learn about the world of black bears that call the Blue Ridge Parkway and surrounding forests home. We’ll bust some bear myths, share surprising facts, and talk about any plants, birds, and animals we encounter along the way.
The walk will be on the Blue Ridge Parkway VC Loop Trail. Depending on time and weather we will either hike the 0.4 mile or 1.3 mile loop. Both hikes are easy difficulty. Both trails have a natural dirt surface that is rocky in places with rock steps. Overall, there is little elevation change, but there are some inclines with grades of over 20%. Both trails are narrow in places. On the 1.3 mile loop the group will be crossing the Parkway to return back to the trailhead. The ranger will help guide the group across the road. It is recommended to bring water and good hiking equipment. Elevation gains for the 1.3-mile loop is 140 ft gain. Elevation gains for the 0.4-mile loop is 50 ft gain. Controlled dogs on a leash are allowed. If there is inclement weather the program will shift to a covered patio or classroom.
