Description

Welcome to the Civil War Book Group!

After years of conflict over the institution of slavery, the Civil War would be the turning point that set the course of the United States into the 20th century and beyond. Join us on the first Wednesday of each month as we explore the meaning of the Civil War and how the past has shaped who we are today through a diverse selection of narratives, novels, and histories. In partnership with the Central Rappahannock Regional Library.

For April:

A Diary from Dixie by Mary Boykin Chestnut

Meet at Fredericksburg Library Branch (1201 Caroline St., Fredericksburg)

From February 1861 to June 1865, Mary Chestnut, a quick-witted Southern society lady, wrote a diary that has become one of the most quoted books of the Civil War period. This work is public domain and the full text can be found online: A Diary from Dixie, by Mary Boykin Chesnut. The work has also been published under the title Mary Chesnut's Diary and in an annotated version, Mary Chestnut's Civil War.
