US Department of Interior archaeologist Samuel Vincent Proudfoot wandered Washington DC in the 1880s. He was looking for evidence of people who had lived here thousands of years before the first European settlers landed in the "New World." Proudfoot found his evidence.

Under streets, in parks, on the riverside, there is evidence that the Nacotchtank (Anacostan) people thrived. They are truly the First People of our Nation's Capital, and they are still here, represented in the Piscataway Conoy, and in the 4000 Native American residents of Washington, DC.

Join us for an exploration of Indigenous Voices at the Sylvan Theater, 4pm, 6pm, and 8pm, on Friday, June 28, during the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.
