This is public river access for the Upper Delaware River located near River Mile 277.5 in Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania. This access is owned by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PA FBC). It is located next to the Zane Grey Museum, which is managed by the National Park Service. This museum is free to visit and is open Memorial Day weekend through the last weekend in September. Amenities and activities such as Junior Ranger activities, exhibit access, the gift shop, etc. are only available when the museum is open. A National Park Passport stamp for the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River is available year-round and is located at the Zane Grey Museum. 

Access Use: 

This is access can be used for launching canoes, kayaks, and other boats. A gravel boat ramp is available to use. Motorized boats are permitted to be launched from this access. 

A seasonal portable toilet is available at this access from Memorial Day to Labor Day. 

Parking: 

Parking is available. Multiple parking lots are available, including a smaller lot able to accommodate approximately 10 vehicles right at the access, and a very large parking lot able to accommodate approximately 30+ vehicles, including RV-size vehicles, across the street next to the Zane Grey Museum. 

River Rules: 

  • Pack It In, Pack It Out: There are no trash cans or garbage receptacles available. Please practice “Leave No Trace” principles and do not litter or leave any trash behind.  

  • No Glass Bottles: Glass bottle use is prohibited on the river. Broken glass is dangerous for both visitors and wildlife. 

  • Wear Your Lifejacket: It can save your life! Life jackets are required to be within reach when on the water and are required to be worn by children 12 years and younger. Life jackets are required to be worn when the river level is 6+ feet, or between November 1 – April 30.  

  • Do not Trespass on Private Property: Many properties around the river are privately owned. Please respect the local community and do not trespass on private lands. 

  • If fishing, you must have a license: Fishing is permitted at all public accesses. Anglers 16+ years of age must have a valid New York State or Pennsylvania fishing license.

Eagle Watching

The Lackawaxen River Access is a popular location to watch bald eagles, especially in the winter when migrating populations of bald eagles come to the Upper Delaware River region. During during Eagle Watch Weekends (generally in January and February) volunteers with the Delaware Highlands Conservancy may staff the Lackawaxen River Access to answer questions and provide eagle watching tips.
