As you walk these grounds and listen to the stories hidden in the stones, can you begin to imagine the complex and vibrant lives of the people of old?

Before you is an original stone papamū for the game of kōnane, much like the one seen at stop #3. Do you notice anything different about this one? Old papamū, such as this one with poho set in 9 rows by 11, are often intentionally made to be asymmetrical. And the sizes of papamū can vary greatly as well.

E hoʻohālike hou? Need a rematch? Modern papamū are often configured with even, square numbers of rows, perhaps a subtle influence from Western culture. Asymmetry in traditional papamū adds a complexity to the otherwise simple mechanics of the game and greatly increased the stakes for the placing of wagers. The greater the risk, the better the wager!

As you explore the smooth pahoehoe lava benches along the coastal trail, search for papamū made centuries ago.
