#3 - Kōnane
Audio Description, Historical/Interpretive Information/Exhibits, Scenic View/Photo Spot
Although originating in ancient times, this game of strategy and skill is still readily enjoyed by those who find themselves upon our shores.
Throughout the centuries, kōnane has not only been appreciated as a past time, but it has also been used as a political tool and a way of settling disputes. It was not uncommon for wagering to accompany a game of kōnane, and at times the stakes could be incredibly steep, including rights to valued property such as canoes, and even land or water use privileges.
Kōnane is played on a flat surface called a papamū which is often smoothed out of stone or wood and sometimes set into the ground itself. On the surface of the papamū, small poho, or depressions, are made to hold alternating rows of black stone and white coral game pieces. The object of kōnane is to be the last player to secure a move on the board.
