This site preserves the only known nursery herd of Columbian mammoths, which includes females and their offspring. The mammoths range in age from about 4 to 50 years old.
These unique layers of sediment preserve more than just mammoths. This group of animals can be used to better understand the environment during the Pleistocene Ice Age.
Recent work has ruled out the possibility of catastrophic flood deposits in the Dig Shelter.
The Dig Shelter preserves three distinct layers of fossils buried in low energy flood plains, areas with slow-moving water.
Evidence preserved in and on the bones suggest the animals experienced multiple periods of extreme stress, and the juveniles show evidence of stress at the time of death. These stresses were likely from harmful environmental conditions.
