Dedicated in the 1990s to honor the Black soldiers who served the U.S. at the Siege of Petersburg. At this point, the critical role Black Federal regiments played in the U.S. success of June 15 by seizing the better part of 1.5 miles of Confederate works while under severe fire from Confederates, including here at Battery #9.
