The U.S. Naval Academy was established as the “Naval School” here on the grounds of Old Fort Severn in 1845. The original ten-acre campus hosted a student body of just 50 midshipmen. In 1850 the school officially became the United States Naval Academy, and is now home to more than 4,000 individuals (called midshipmen) during their four years of academic and military training.

You can enter the Naval Academy at Gate 1 through the Visitor’s Center with a photo ID. Explore the grounds and the Academy Museum (located in Preble Hall) on your own, or tours can be arranged at the Visitor’s Center.
