In 1917, Harry Truman left the farm to fight in World War I. While he was away, the farm was run by his sister who was also responsible to care for their mother. He returned from war in 1919 with no plans to return to being a farmer. The family decided to sell the farm equipment and lease the land. Harry Truman married Bess and moved into 219 N Delaware in Independence, Missouri where his story continues.
