During the Petersburg Campaign, Union and Confederate troops developed a complex system of trenches and earthworks. The viciousness of Civil War trench warfare was a small preview brutality of trench warfare during World War I.
Soldiers from the 80th Infantry Division at Fort Lee trained to dig different types of trenches, machine gun emplacements, bombproofs, and connect them into a seamless network.
The remains of trenches from two different wars can be found near each other along the trails at the start of the tour road and near Battery 7.
