The British townsite and fort at Frederica, circa 1740, was seemingly impenetrable. Earthworks six feet high, two rows of eight foot posts called palisades, a moat, and armed soldiers made for a quality defense system.
Today, at the foot of the bridge, on either side of the railing, are remnants of the mile-long wall that once enclosed the town of Frederica. Posts mark the location of the town gate, now a tree-covered embankment. Soldiers once stood guard duty here on a firing step, making sure the enemy did not enter the town at this point.
The expanse in front of the town wall is Broad Street. Imagine it lined with houses and shops.
