The C&O Canal aqueducts are “water bridges” that once carried canal boats over the creeks and rivers that flow into the Potomac. The Town Creek Aqueduct is the eleventh of twelve such “works of art” on the canal. Construction began in 1837 and was abandoned in 1838 during the Canal company’s financial crisis. It was completed during the final phase of canal construction (1848-1850) by Michael Byrne.
