Federal forces stopped here while pursuing Confederate forces after the battle on January 19, 1862. After pushing Confederate pickets from the area, Federal forces camped and rested here to prepare for a morning assault on the Confederate winter encampment at Beech Grove.
Throughout the night of January 19, Federal artillery deployed on the high ground in the area of Moulden's Hill shelled the Confederate encampment all night. When Federal forces advanced upon the encampment the next morning, January 20, they found the area abandoned, Confederate troops having retreated across the Cumberland River during the night.
