This is the location of a small log cabin used by Confederate forces as a field hospital during the Battle of Mill Springs. The hospital was in operation throughout the battle and most likely continued operating even after its capture by Federal forces after the Confederate retreat. A few of the foundation stones of the cabin are visible.
Often set up in nearby homes, businesses, and even churches, field hospitals were rudimentary, with doctors and surgeons using whatever they could to supplement their meager supplies. This location was no different, taking advantage of a nearby structure to provide shelter to injured men.
