At this location Confederate forces, the 17th, 28th, 29th Tennesse and the 16th Alabama Infantry regiments, held attempted to hold back advancing Federal forces in a "Last Stand". Once it was clear that was not possible and Confederate forces were in a full fighting retreat, Confederate artillery posted at the top of Last Stand Hill attempted to bombard Federal forces in order to allow their fellow units to retreat. They were only able to fire a few shorts due to a fear of friendly fire.

This location offers a good view of Zollicoffer Park and the battlefield to the north, providing the Confederate perspective of the battle.
