Tour #4, Stop #6 - The White House

Currier and Ives
Quick Facts
Significance:
Civil War battlefield.
The White House got its name from a small, clapboard farmhouse painted white. It was the home of Benjamin Bruton, a local farmer and Union man who had voted against secession in 1861. He was well-known by Union officers as an ally, and his wife would often supply Union soldiers in hospitals with milk from the Bruton's dairy cows. His home and field, stretching to the north of the house, were about to become scene to some of the fiercest and bloodiest fighting of the entire Battle of Corinth.
