Significance:
Battle site
Battery F was one of six forts designed by Captain Frederick Prime and constructed in the early summer of 1862. The line of forts was part of a larger project to complete the encirclement of Corinth, begun in April by the Confederates. When completed, the forts of the “Halleck Line” were to be connected with a series of rifle pits. By mid-summer the larger project was deemed impractical and only the forts were completed. A compact, inner-line was constructed (the “Rosecrans Line”) and the heavy artillery was repositioned closer to the city.
When the battle began on October 3, 1862, a brigade of Iowa infantry under Colonel Marcellus Crocker was sent to Battery F to protect the Union left flank. Two field pieces of the 3rd Ohio Battery were placed in the fort as support.
