The seventh fort of the inner defensive line (Rosecrans Line) was still under construction on the morning of October 4, 1862. The soldiers and contrabands working on the fortification had labored through the night to make it serviceable for the coming action. Battery Powell was named for Captain Albert M. Powell, Chief of Artillery for Brigadier General Charles S. Hamilton’s division. An 1860 graduate of West Point, Powell had been the commander of Battery M, 1st Missouri Light Artillery until promoted to his new position just days before the battle. Powell survived the war, was brevetted to Lieutenant Colonel, and died of a fall from his horse in 1868 in Dakota Territory.
