When you hear the word torpedo you may think of something like an underwater missile fired by a submarine. The torpedoes stored in this building were of an older sort, mines that floated beneath the surface of the water that could be deployed into the narrows via the tracks in the ground, and remotely detonated if an enemy vessel attempted to enter the harbor. The structure was constructed between 1892 and 1894; a fire in the 1980s reduced it to the ruin we see today.

A frequent question from visitors is “which country were the forts and other structures here built to defend against?” Do you think that most of the fortifications at Fort Wadsworth were designed with a particular adversary in mind? The United States currently has the largest military in the world by several orders of magnitude, is this to prepare for a specific threat or for another reason?
