Quick Facts
Location:
Thurmond, WV
Significance:
The Thurmond Black Church is one of the few historic African American churches still standing in the New River Gorge.
Across the New River from the Thurmond Depot sitting in the edge of the forest along Dunloup Creek is one of the few historic African American churches still standing in the New River Gorge. For many years, this church served the spiritual needs of the Black community in the coal camps and railroad towns along the New River. The name and denomination of the church has been lost in time but its continued presence reminds us of a piece of our heritage.

The black church at Thurmond can be reached on the Church Loop Trail. For more information go to: Thurmond, Stonecliff, and Cunard Area Trails.
