Painting The Rock is a community tradition on San Juan Island

Quick Facts
Location:
Friday Harbor, WA
The Rock exemplifies the community spirit and devotion to creative expression that permeate the San Juan Island community. This large rock, located in a field on winding Beaverton Valley Road has become a center for collaborative community art creation. The Rock's paintings memorialize recently passed community members, graduating high school seniors, local events, and changing seasons.

The Rock itself is a testament to a changing world. A glacial erratic, this boulder was broken off from a larger formation by a glacier. As the glaciers moved and receded, they deposited this rock far from its original location on this field on San Juan Island, where it lies today.

The Rock is regularly repainted by our local community. That means that each visit to The Rock may be different and will give you a sense of the wide variety of artistic talents active in our community.
