Katmai National Park & Preserve, Alaska

Scenic View/Photo Spot

The Riffles Platform is located approximately 100 yards (91m), downstream of Brooks Falls and the Falls Platform. The platform is situated in front of a series of shallow rapids (riffles). It’s an excellent area to see sows with cubs, subadults and other bears looking to avoid competition from more dominate bears at the Falls.

Unlike the Falls Platform, the Riffles Platform does not have any capacity or time limit and does not restrict the use of tripods. The Riffles Platform, adjacent Treehouse (which is covered, has limited seating and some interpretive displays but offers no direct views of the river), and the Falls Platform are closed from 10pm to 7am June 15–August 15. From the Visitor Center, it is a 1.2 mile (1.9km) one way trip to the Brooks Falls and Riffles Platform. The nearest restroom is .6 miles away at the start of the Brooks Falls Trail.

***Covid-19 mitigation procedures are in place for the 2021 season which limits capacity on the platform.
