The Planting Department
Remembering back to the engineer’s office, the engineers created the canvas, and those in the planting department did the painting. Planting plans were the last to be produced on any project, because so much work had to be done ahead of it. The landscape had to be graded, drainage concerns addressed, and irrigation needs handled all before any plants could be put in. A typical example of what the planting department created, was what we like to call plant by number. There was a key at the top of the plan, and throughout the plan numbers scattered, correlating to the key and what species could be planted. Bubbles were drawn to show how much area a certain plant should take up. The first number in the bubble represents a plant, with a planting list often put right on the plan to reference. The second numbers tells us how many of that plant to place, so, plant by number.
