The Packing House in Cambridge, Maryland, preserves and reimagines the last remaining building of the Phillips Packing Company, once the largest canning enterprise in the world. This historic structure, known as Factory F, embodies the stories of innovation, resilience, and community that defined the Chesapeake Bay region throughout the twentieth century. At its height, Phillips Packing Company employed thousands of workers and supplied food and military rations during both World Wars, leaving a profound impact on the economy and culture of the Eastern Shore.
Today, Cross Street Partners has repurposed the 60,000-square-foot building into a dynamic hub for agriculture, aquaculture, environmental technologies, and food-based enterprises. Visitors can experience interpretation that connects Cambridge’s heritage to broader Chesapeake Bay stories of farming, fisheries, and industry. Planned permanent exhibits will highlight themes of innovation and human determination, while site-based interpretation tells the fuller, and often underrepresented, stories of Chesapeake labor, culture, and community.
The Packing House also serves as a community gathering space with public and a two-story atrium for events. An adjacent rail-to-trail and interpretive walkway invites visitors to explore the city’s history, including the global reach of Cambridge’s wartime food production. Future connections to Cannery Park will expand opportunities for recreation and reflection. Learn more on the Packing House website.
