When the former 7,000-foot high Aniakchak peak erupted and collapsed, it formed Aniakchak Caldera. Water eventually filled most of the caldera, similar to Crater Lake in Oregon. The caldera wall was breached roughly 2,000 years ago and the force of the outrushing water carved The Gates. The Gates now stand as a v-shaped notch in the caldera rim through which the Aniakchak River now flows.
