Ceremonies and drills were part of the daily routine at military posts throughout the Indian Wars period. Reveille and Retreat were the two most important ceremonies performed on the parade ground. The flag was raised at Reveille and lowered at Retreat. In both cases all the soldiers at the post stood in formation by company as the color guard performed the ceremony. Other ceremonies could include inspections and troop reviews.

Military drills were how soldiers learned, and reinforced, the maneuvers they would use in combat, including marching in formation and responding to the various bugle calls that signaled different movements. This important practice took place on the parade ground.
